Standing The Test Of Times
There’s this one bookstore, on the first floor of Joo Chiat Complex in Geylang Serai, H Hashim Bin H Abdullah/ H Hashim Enterprise, you must have heard of it, and if not, you
should definitely know that it is continually preserving cultural integrity in the face of modernity. Founded in 1922 by Haji Hashim Bin Haji Abdullah, Abdul Halim’s (the friendly uncle we conversed with) great-grandfather. Haji Hashim expressed to us that
he came
from a family of writers and authors who were involved in printing before shifting to selling books.

هاشم أنه ينحدر من عائلةٍ من الكتّاب والمؤلفين الذين كانوا يعملون
في مجال الطباعة قبل أن ينتقلوا إلى بيع الكتب
“Those days they had started with printing, but then the printing was not so good so they started selling books instead. Arwah (Late) Haji Hashim got married and then he got the shop as a present, 134 Arab Street, as a wedding present, so he ran the shop, that was 1922” says Abdul Halim.
The store was later moved to Joo Chiat Complex.
"في تلك الأيام كانوا قد بدأوا بالطباعة، ولكن جودة الطباعة لم تكن جيدة،
فانتقلوا إلى بيع الكتب بدلًا منها. والمرحوم الحاج هاشم تزوّج، ثم حصل
على المتجر الواقع في ١٣٤ شارع العرب كهدية زواج، وتولّى إدارته
منذ عام 1922"، يقول عبد الحليم. وقد نُقِل المتجر لاحقًا إلى
مجمّع جوجيات.
To Abdul Halim, everything comes down to integrity; the store stands as a tribute to perseverance and community memory. “It’s really about integrity. We serve customers honestly, with fair pricing and personal service. That’s what brings people back. But the challenge today is that the younger generation doesn’t visit shops like this anymore and I understand.”
بالنسبة لعبد الحليم، فالنزاهة هي الأساس، والمتجر يظل شاهدًا
على الصمود وذاكرة المجتمع. ويقول: "النزاهة هي كل شيء.
نخدم الزبائن بصدق، وأسعارنا معقولة، فنحن نرى عملنا خدمة
للمجتمع. والخدمة الشخصية مهمة لأنها تجعل الناس يعودون.
لكن التحدّي اليوم هو أن الجيل الأصغر لم يعد يزور هذه المحال،
وأنا أتفهم ذلك."
Ever since 1922, physical books have clearly held deep meaning for him. Owning and reading a book slows life down in a way nothing else does. “If you ask me for a memorable story, I’d say it’s the support from the community. Even after all these years in business, and despite the challenges, the early generations still come in. It’s been so long, so old. From my childhood to the day I started running the shop on Arab Street, all the memories come back.”
منذ عام 1922، ما زالت الكتب الورقية تحمل له معنى عميقً؛
فامتلاك كتاب وقراءته يبطئان إيقاع الحياة بطريقة لا يقدّمها شيء آخر.ويقول: "لو سألتني عن ذكرى لا تُنسى، لقلت إنها دعم المجتمع لنا.فعلى الرغم من كل هذه السنين والتحديات، ما زال أبناءالأجيال الأولى يزورون المتجر. لقد مرّ وقت طويل جدًّا،ومنذ طفولتي إلى حين بدأت إدارة المحل في شارع العرب،
تعود إليّ كل تلك الذكريات."
“But to tell you, to have the experience of owning something physical
and reading it, it’s different. You’ll enjoy reading something physical
in front of you, with the time spent.”
